Clinical and Supervisory Experience

An Approved Clinical Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), my clinical experience spans fifteen years. I am an instructor at the University of Guelph, former Ethics Specialist for the Ontario Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and provide supervision to practicing therapists who consult me privately.

Supervision Style

My style is gentle, supportive and highly collaborative. Those who have been supervised by me report feeling honoured, trusted and rejuvenated, and safe to talk about the most challenging aspects of their work. My commitment is to help you connect to your own unique approach, drawing on your personal values, experiences, and preferred therapeutic perspectives. As a gatekeeper to the profession, I take my work very seriously. Accordingly, I incorporate a strong focus on therapeutic and ethical excellence.

Clinical Approach

My personal approach to therapy is eclectic, and grounded in a post-modern paradigm.  I work from the following therapeutic perspectives and am comfortable providing clinical supervision in each of them or in some combination:
  • Systemic family therapies
  • Emotionally Focused Couple and Family Therapy (either Sue Johnson or Les Greenberg style)
  • Dialogic therapy
  • Narrative therapy
  • Solution Focused therapy

Focus and Expertise

Areas of focus or expertise include:
  • couple therapy
  • trauma, particularly domestic violence and child abuse, and especially the perpetration of harm
  • sex and sexuality
  • chronic pain and illness
  • substance use problems and addictions
  • professional ethics
  • the unique experiences of working in non-profit agencies
  • when therapists are experiencing hardship in their personal lives and need extra support in their work
My approach may be of particular appeal to those interested in using therapy to respond to social inequities.

The AAMFT Approved Supervisor Designation

AAMFT is recognized for its stringent membership standards. In order to achieve the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation, I completed an extensive training and mentoring program over a 3-year period. I maintain an ongoing commitment to my learning and development as a supervisor and am required to refresh my supervisory skills and training every 5 years.
